How to recover lost admin password in WordPress

Introduction

Imagine that you want to enter your WordPress Admin Dashboard, but you have forgotten your password. What to do now?

Fortunately, there is a super-easy way to recover a lost password securely using the "Lost-password" WordPress feature. This feature will provide you with a special password reset link, which will allow you to set a new password no matter what the old one was. In this tutorial, we will show you how to do that step by step.

Accessing the Admin Login page

To reset your admin password, you have to access the Login page of your WordPress Admin Dashboard. You can do that by accessing your domain followed by "/wp-admin", i.e., "yourdomain.com/wp-admin", where "yourdomain.com" stands for your actual domain name.

Resetting the Admin Password

Assuming that you have now accessed the WordPress admin area, you should now see the standard login page which you were using previously to log into the Administrative Dashboard.

Right under the section intended for your login username and password, you will find the "Lost your password?" link. Please, click on it.

Upon doing that, you will be presented with a new field within which you will need to provide the username or the email address associated with your WordPress account. When you enter the required information, please click the "Get New Password" button.

This action will generate a unique link for resetting the password and send it to the corresponding email address.

Please, bear in mind that no matter if you enter the admin username or the email address, you will still end up receiving an email with the new password link. Also, note that if the email address you entered does not exist in the WordPress database, no email will be sent to it.

Now, it is time to check your email account. The password reset notification should look similar to the screenshot example below.

You should click on the link, which will then redirect you to the password reset page of WordPress.

Once there, you will be presented with a field already containing a randomly generated password. If you prefer to enter a custom password, you can simply do so by replacing the current one.

Right below, you will also see a Password strength indicator. We would recommend you avoid passwords indicated as "Weak" or even "Medium".

Once you specify your new password, please, click on the “Reset Password” button.

When the form is submitted, WordPress will redirect you to a page with a message, indicating that you successfully had reset the user's password. Next to the message, you will find a "Log in" link.
